６개월 동안 차기 유럽연합 의장국을 맡은 체코 공화국의 잰 두식 환경부 장관은 환경이 최우선 과제라고 말했습니다. 기후변화에 대한 적응, 생물 다양성의 보호, 산업 배출물 감소, 제품에 환경라벨 부착 및 덴마크에서 개최되는 ２００９년 세계 지구온난화 토론의 최종 준비 등을 계획합니다. 전세계 기후를 염려하는 체코 공화국과 환경부 장관께 깊이 감사드립니다. 전 세계와 유럽 시민들을 위해 체코 리더십의 많은 진보와 친환경 성취를 빕니다.

미국의 첫 생물연료 비행이 성공했습니다.

보잉 항공사와 제휴한 컨티넨탈 항공은 한 엔진을 산호유동 기름, 녹조와 기존 제트유 혼합 연료로 가동하고 다른 엔진은 기존 연료를 사용한 ７３７비행기를 한 시간 ４０분 동안 비행시켰습니다. 시험 비행을 근거로 보잉사 대변인인 테란스 스콧 씨는 혼합 생물 연료로 기존 연료보다 훨씬 더 나은 비행을 할 수 있다고 말합니다. 친환경 비행 연료 개발을 위해 노력한 컨티넨탈 항공과 보잉사 및 모든 분들께 경의를 표합니다. 모든 여행자들이 친환경 비행기를 사용하는 날이 곧 오길 고대합니다.

계속되는 가뭄으로 중국이 우려합니다.

중국 북부와 동부의 ６개 성은 수자원 부족에 대처하고 있으며 산시성은 지난 １０월 이래 비가 내리지 않아 약 백만 명의 주민이 물 부족을 겪고 있습니다. 농림부에 따르면 ６개 성 전역에 걸쳐 ５백여만 헥타르의 밀 농지가 가뭄의 영향을 받았는데 이는 작년의 다섯 배에 달합니다. 새 우물을 파고 관개 시설을 만들고 식수를 공급하는 등 조치가 취해지고 있습니다. 중국의 가뭄이 속히 끝나 모든 이가 필요한 자원을 공급받길 빕니다. 전 인류가 지속 가능하고 자비로운 삶의 방식을 택해 이 같은 심각한 상황이 완화되길 바랍니다.

작년 ８월 국제 세미나에서 자연재해에 관한 질문에 칭하이 무상사는 다음처럼 답하셨습니다.

칭하이 무상사: 요즘 재난은 어느 때보다 자주 일어납니다. 지진이 아니면 폭풍, 태풍, 가뭄이 있지요. 미국 서부는 물을 걱정하고 있습니다. 이건 오래 가지 않는 지진보다 더욱 영구적인 재난입니다. 악업의 대가는 지불돼야 합니다. 사람들이 고귀한 생활방식으로 바꾸고 행성과 동물을 구하기 위해 그저 채식을 한다면 그들 자신을 구하기에도 충분합니다.

스웨덴 회사가 태양열 정수기를 개발합니다.

스웨덴어로 『태양수』를 뜻하는 『솔바텐』은 저렴한 최신 정수 시설로 많은 개도국들의 필요를 충족시킵니다. 태양 에너지를 주로 사용하는데 두 개의 탱크에 몇 리터의 물을 붓고 ６시간 동안 햇빛에 놓아 둡니다. 내부 수온이 섭씨 ５５도(화씨 １３１도)에 이르면 물을 사용해도 좋다는 표시가 나옵니다. 마지막으로 물은 흘러나올 때도 여과가 됩니다. 단순하고 사용하기 쉬운 시스템이군요. 사려 깊은 친환경 기술 혁신을 이룬 솔바텐을 치하하며 전세계 많은 생명체에 이로움을 주길 빕니다.

European Union leadership ranks environment at the top of the list.

 As the Czech Republic assumes presidency of the European Union for the next six months, the country’s Deputy Environment Minister Jan Dusik stated that environment is a top priority. Plans include addressing adaptation to climate change, protecting biodiversity, reducing industrial emissions, labeling products for environmental impact and finalizing preparations for the 2009 international global warming discussions in Denmark. We deeply appreciate your concern for our world’s climate, Your Excellency and Czech Republic. Wishing your leadership many progressive and green accomplishments for Europeans as well as citizens across the globe.

Biofuels take to the skies in airline tests

First US test flight with biofuel successful. Partnered with aeronautics company Boeing, Continental Airlines flew a 737 plane for an hour and 40 minutes with one engine powered by a mixture of jatropha oil, algae and conventional jet fuel while the second engine used all conventional fuel. Based on tests conducted in-flight, Boeing spokesperson Terrance Scott stated that the biofuel mixture provided even better performance than conventional fuel. A green hats off Continental Airlines, Boeing and all others who are working to develop greener fuel sources for the skies. We look forward to the day coming soon when eco-friendly air transportation is the norm for all travelers!

Prolonged drought hits parts of north, east China

Lingering drought raises concern in China. As six provinces in northern and eastern China attempt to cope with limited water supplies, in Shanxi province, where there has been no rain since last October, nearly 1 million people are facing water shortages. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 5 million hectares of wheat crops have been compromised across the provinces, almost five times more than last year. Work is being done to dig new wells, construct irrigation facilities and deliver drinking water. Our prayers that the drought soon ends in China and that all those in need receive the supplies they require. May sustainable and compassionate lifestyles adopted by all Earth’s inhabitants lessen severe conditions such as these.

 During an international seminar in August 2008, in answer to a question regarding the natural disasters, Supreme Master Ching Hai had answered as follows:

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Nowadays the disasters are more frequent than ever. If it’s not earthquake, then it is storm, typhoon, drought. Western Americans now worry about water. This is even more permanent disaster than just earthquake, which lasts not long. The bad karma has to be paid. If the people turn to noble lifestyle, just even be vegetarian to save the planet, to save the animals, that’s enough to save them also.

New 35 dollar water purifier

Swedish company develops solar water purifier. The “Solvatten,” meaning “sunwater” in Swedish, is a new technology for providing affordable water purification to meet the needs of many developing countries. Using primarily solar energy to accomplish this task, several liters of water poured into two tanks and are then left in the sun for up to 6 hours. Once the water temperature inside reaches 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit), an indicator displays the water’s readiness for use. As a final step the water is also filtered when pouring out for use. What a simple and user-friendly system!
