우루과이가 가뭄 비상 사태를 선포했습니다.

３０년간 강우량이 감소하고 농부들이 가뭄으로 계절 작물을 심지 못하면서 우루과이 농림부의 아가지 장관은 ２５０만 이상의 헥타르 지역을 비상지대로 선포했습니다. 물 보존을 위해 우루과이 정부는 정원에 물주기, 세차 및 수영장 물 채우기 같은 행동을 금하고 피해를 입은 ３만 ２천 소농민에게 원조를 약속했습니다. 우루과이의 극심한 가뭄이 감로수로 완화되길 기원합니다. 전세계 인류가 지구와 지구 생명체를 사랑과 친절로 대하여 이 같은 상황이 줄어들길 바랍니다.

２００８년 ８월 칭하이 무상사는 뉴질랜드 회원들과의 화상회의에서 물 보존을 위한 최상의 해결책을 말씀하셨습니다.

칭하이 무상사: 물론 기후변화는 다른 것과 마찬가지로 모든 것에 영향을 미칩니다. 그러나 축산에 더 많은 영향을 미칠 겁니다. 지금 가축사육은 채소 재배보다 더 많은 물이 사용됩니다. 그래서 물이 부족하게 되면 물론 축산업은 자동적으로 최소화될 것입니다. 난 그게 곧 제로가 되길 바랍니다. 동물을 더 많이 기를수록 더 많은 물이 필요하니까요. 그들이 더 많은 물을 사용하면 우리가 농작물 재배 같은 채식 식품 생산에 사용할 물이 더 적게 됩니다. 모두가 그걸 깨닫기를 바랍니다.

일본이 더 많은 지열 에너지를 사용합니다.

１８개 지열발전소가 이미 가동중인 일본은 이 지속 가능한 에너지원의 더 많은 사용을 모색합니다. 최신 지열 프로젝트로 일본의 미츠비시 머티리얼스는 미국의 제이 파워와 제휴해 ４억３천만불 발전소를 건설 중입니다. ６만 킬로와트 동력 생산을 목표로 하는 이 사업과 함께 일본 정부는 현재 지열 에너지 개발 촉진을 위한 지침을 만들고 있습니다. 친환경 미래를 위해 헌신하는 일본과 참가 회사들에 박수 보냅니다. 큰 성공을 거두어 일본 국민들에게 풍부한 지속가능 에너지를 공급하길 바랍니다.

위험에 처한 미국 남동부 지역이 발표됐습니다.

주요한 생태 기구인 남부 환경 법률 센터(ＳＥＬＣ)는 버지니아, 테네시, 노스캐롤라이나, 사우스캐롤라이나, 조지아와 앨라배마 ６개 주를 평가하여 자연미와 다양성을 갖췄지만 지구 온난화와 인류의 개발로 즉각적인 위협에 처한 열 개 지역을 발표했습니다. Uruguay declares drought-induced state of emergency.

With rainfall at the lowest level in three decades and farmers still unable to plant seasonal crops due to the prolonged drought, Uruguayan Minister of Agriculture, Ernesto Agazzi, has declared more than 2.5 million hectares as emergency zones. In an effort to conserve water, the government has banned activities such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling swimming pools, while also promising assistance to the some 32,000 affected families on small farms. We pray for the Divine grace of rain to alleviate these extremely dry conditions in Uruguay. May humans everywhere help diminish conditions like these by responding with love and kindness toward our planet and all her inhabitants.

Japan taps into power of volcanoes with geothermal energy plants

Japan plugs into more geothermal energy. With 18 plants already in operation, Japan is seeking to make further use of this sustainable energy source. One of the newest geothermal projects is a US$430 million plant being built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Materials and US-based J-Power. With this project’s goal of generating 60,000 kilowatts of power, Japan’s government is now creating guidelines for further development of geothermal energy. Law Center Names 10 Most Endangered Places in southeastern US

Endangered areas identified in southeastern US. Leading ecological organization, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), has evaluated a 6-state region which includes Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama and listed the top 10 sites of natural beauty and diversity facing immediate threats from global warming and human development. SELC's Deputy Director Jeff Gleason stated, “If our six-state region were viewed as a country, we would rank seventh in the world for output of carbon dioxide.” The deputy director thus recommended carbon emission reduction goals as an essential part of the region’s global warming solution.
