진실로 문명화된 행성을 정의합니다.

인류 역사를 통해서 기술은 아주 빠른 속도로 발달하였습니다. 지난 세기만 해도 교통 수단과 의학의 발달， 우주 여행을 포함해 문명의 성장에 기여한 강력한 발전이 있었습니다. 그러나 소위 진보라고 불리는 이러한 것에서 야기되는 기후변화의 맥락에서 칭하이 무상사는 미국 뉴욕 협회원들과의 최근 화상회의에서 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다.

협회원: 문명이 최고점에 도달할 때마다 재앙이 생겼습니다. 예를 들면 지구 온난화나 화산 분출 등인데 이는 모든 인류의 업적을 파괴하고 흔적도 남기지 않았습니다. 그러나 현재 지구는 높은 의식 상태로 고양되었기에 문명이 완전히 파괴되지는 않고 영적 및 과학적  업적이 남게 되는 건가요？

칭하이 무상사: 문명이 최고점에 이른다고 행성이 파괴되고  모든 업적들이 파괴되는 것은 아닙니다. 그런 게 아닙니다. 이 세상에선 몰라도 다 그렇지는 않아요. 이 파멸은 기술적 발달이 영적인 성취를 앞지를 때만 일어납니다. 우리의 세계가 전체로서 충분히 고양되지 않았기에 여전히 해로운 습관들과 부정적인 영향을 없애려고 노력하고 있는 거지요. 만약 영적인 발달과 과학적인 발달이 함께 간다면 더욱 이상적이겠지요. 그러면 파멸은 결코 일어나지 않을 겁니다. 인류는 자신들의 환경과 삶 그리고 지구에 사는 생물들에게 해를 끼치지 않으면서 기술적 진보를 다룰 수 있을 만큼 충분히 깨우칠 것입니다. 요점은 우리가 영성도 개발해야 한다는 겁니다. 행성에 사는 모든 이의 영성이 개발됐을 때 그 행성을 문명화된 행성으로 부를 수 있습니다.

Defining a truly civilized planet.

Throughout human history, technology has developed at an ever accelerating rate. In the past century alone, we have seen powerful developments that contributed to the growth of civilization, including inventions in transport, medicine and space travel. Yet, in the context of climate changes resulting from some of these so-called “advances,” Supreme Master Ching Hai made the following remarks during the recent videoconference with our Association members in New York, USA.

Our Association member (e): Every time a civilization came to its peak, a disaster happened. For example, global warming or volcanic eruptions and it destroyed all the achievements of all the people, leaving no trace. But now that our planet has elevated to a higher state of consciousness, does it mean that the civilization won’t be totally erased anymore and the spiritual and scientific achievements will be spared?

Supreme Master Ching Hai: It’s not always that when the world reach the peak of her civilization then the planet will be destroyed and all the achievement be destroyed. It’s not like that. It’s perhaps in our world but not in every world. This destruction only happens when our technological development outweighs the spiritual achievement. So, because our world as a whole has not elevated enough. So they are still struggling to forsake some unwholesome habits, and less positive traces.

It’s even more ideal if spiritual and scientific developments go hand in hand. Then destruction will never occur. Because humans will be enlightened enough to handle technological progress, without causing harm to their surroundings and their lives, and the lives of others involved in the same planet. So, the main point is we have to develop spiritual also. When spiritual consciousness develop for all the people on the planet, then we can call that  planet a civilized planet.

노르웨이 국회의원 잉가 토르킬드센: 육류 소비가 기후변화뿐 아니라 세계 식량위기에 중요한 기여를 한다는 사실을 사람들에게 알리는 것이 중요합니다. 육류 소비를 줄이는 것은 큰 잠재력입니다. 국내 뿐 아니라 국제적으로 예를 들어 ＥＵ (유럽연합)와 ＷＴＯ (세계무역기구)에서 가격 구조와 농업정책을 살펴봐야 한다고 생각해요 정치인들이 단호한 선택을 하여 소비자와 국제기구들의 관심을 환기시켜야 해요 모두에게 더 많은 소비를 허용하는 편향된 성장 정책을 받아들여선 안됩니다. 고위층에서 몇 가지 선택을 하여 예로， 육류생산을 줄이는 농업정책을 발표해야 된다고 생각해요.

Norwegian Parliament Member Inga Thorkildsen speaks on meat factor in climate policy. 

Norway is one of Europe’s leading countries in setting goals for carbon emission reductions. Supreme Master Television interviewed Inga Marte Thorkildsen, Member of the Standing Committee on Energy and Environment in Norway’s Storting (Parliament), on her views for the environment.

Inga Marte Thorkildsen, Norwegian Parliament Member: We are going to be carbon neutral within 2030. It means that we either shall reduce our emissions within Norway or buy quotas for all our emissions.

VOICE: We asked Parliament Member Inga Marte Thorkildsen on possibly expanding Norway’s climate change policy to include less meat production and consumption, one of the largest potential areas for reducing greenhouse gases.

Inga Marte Thorkildsen, Norwegian Parliament Member: It is important to make people aware that their meat consumption is an important contributor both to climate changes, but also to the food crisis in the world. And it’s a big potential to reduce meat consumption, and I think we have to look at the price mechanism and the policy of agriculture within the nation but also internationally in EU (European Union) and WTO (World Trade Organization), for example. So there we have to challenge consumers and dare to take some tough choices as politicians and challenge the international organizations. And not accept one-sided growth policy about everyone being allowed to consume more and eat more. I think we have to make some choices from the top and say that our agriculture shall produce less meat, for example.

VOICE: We appreciate Ms. Thorkildsen’s consideration of government policies to reduce meat intake. May more government leaders see that new measures to curb meat production could mean great strides toward a sustainable, prosperous world.

인도네시아 전역에서 수자원 공급이 ６０％까지 감소돼 인드라마유와 치레본 등 섭정 관할구 내 수확이 어려움에 처했습니다. 주민들은 신선한 물을 구하기 어렵고 아주 적은 양의 물이라도 판매인에게 돈을 지불해야 합니다. 섭정관할구 정부는 물 펌프 배포와 담수화 작업을 연구하고 있습니다. 연구하고 있습니다. 주민들께 물을 제공하기 위해 노력하는 관계 정부에 감사드립니다. 소중한 생물권의 균형 회복이란 이 시대의 필요성을 우리 모두 자각하길 바랍니다. 

Water resources dwindling in Indonesia.

As supplies decrease by up to 60 percent across the island nation, harvests in regencies such as Cirebon and Indramayu are being threatened. Individuals in these areas are also having difficulty finding fresh water, with residents having to pay vendors for even small amounts. The regencies’ governments are looking into distributing water pumps to districts as well as employing desalination.

Thank you, concerned governments, for your efforts to provide water for the people. May we all be awakened to this time of urgent need to restore the balance of our precious biosphere. (*)

동물세계가 인간활동의 영향을 받습니다.

『라이브 사이언스』 최근 기사에선 인간이 야기한 기후변화에 대한 적응의 예를 인용했는데 먹이를 구하기 위해 식습관을 바꿔야 하는 동물들도 언급됐습니다. 사실 많은 초식동물이 먹이를 구할 수 없고 파충류， 양서류， 기생충 같은 동물들은 저온 지역으로 이주를 시도하고 있습니다. 수온 상승과 인간이 야기한 유독 오염물과 석유가 해양에 퍼져 해양 생물 개체수가 변화해 동물 멸종을 가속화하고 있습니다. 또한 해양종의 약 ２５％가 인간 수송으로 다른 지역에 살게 됨에 따라 이동 패턴도 변하고 있습니다. 인간 활동의 커다란 영향에 대해 주의를 준 라이브 사이언스에 감사드립니다. 신의 창조물들과 조화로이 공존하고 손실을 줄이기 위해 신속한 환경보호 행동이 취해지길 

Animal kingdom affected by human activities.

A recent article in “LiveScience” cites examples of human-caused climate change adaptations, which include animals being forced to adapt their eating habits due to changing availability of foods. In fact, many herbivores can’t even find food to eat. Some are also attempting to migrate to cooler areas, including reptiles, amphibians and parasites. Populations of marine life have changed due to water temperatures rising, and the ocean dispersal of toxic pollutants and oil by humans is speeding up the extinction of animals. Also, migration patterns are being altered as nearly 25 percent of marine species ultimately reside in other areas due to transport by human means.

Al Gore makes surprise appearance to discuss global warming.

Former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Al Gore was an unexpected but welcome guest at the annual Netroots Nation convention, in Austin, Texas USA.  Mr. Gore came to encourage Netroots Nation bloggers to use their grassroots influence in promoting the energy challenge he has issued, which is for the United States to switch to 100 percent sustainable energy within 10 years. During his address, audience members asked Mr. Gore about the effect of meat-eating on global warming. He stated, “It is true that it would be healthier for us as individuals and as a planet if we consumed less meat.”

Many thanks, Mr. Gore, for your encouragement of steps toward sustainability that include a more plant-based diet. We pray that everyone becomes aware of the animal-free vegetarian lifestyle as the fastest and most effective means of reversing global warming.
