어린이들을 위한 희망의 말씀

많은 어린이들이 그들이 물려받을 환경을 인지하며  일부는 이에 절망감을 느낍니다. 최근 산호세에서 갖은 협회원들과의 화상회의에서 칭하이 무상사는 이 난관에 대해 어린이와 어른에게 두루 적용될 수 있는 메시지로서  답변하였습니다.

협회원: 최근에 초등학생들이 그들이 자랐을 때 무엇을 하고 싶은지 이야기하는 것을 들었습니다. 답변 중 하나는  이랬어요. 『우리는  그때 지구온난화로  살아있지도  않을 텐데 대답해서  뭐해요?』 전 지구 온난화로 절망하는 아이들에게 어떠한 용기를 줄 수 있는지  궁금합니다.

칭하이 무상사 : 긍정적이 되라고 이야기하세요. 희망을 가지고 채식을 하라고 하세요. 환경을 보호하고 좋은 일을 하라고요. 그러면 하늘이 그들을 보호할 거예요. 그리고 우리에겐 미래가 있을 겁니다. 모든 게 언제든 바뀔  수 있다고 말하세요. 그건 그들의 태도, 모든 사람들의 태도와 공헌에 달려 있습니다. 채식을 하고 타인에게도 장려한다면 상황은 나아질 겁니다.

A word of hope for the children.

Many children are aware of the environment they are set to inherit, and some cannot help but feel despair. In the recent videoconference with our Association members in San Jose, California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai conveyed her response to this dilemma with a message applicable to young and old alike.

Our Association member (F): I have recently heard of elementary school students who were speaking about what they wanted to be when they grew up. And one of the answers was, “We won’t be alive then because of global warming, so what’s the point of answering?” And I was just wondering what kind of inspiration you can give the children who are feeling hopeless about global warming?

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Well, you tell them to be positive. Tell them to keep up hope and go veg. And please be green and do good. Then Heaven will protect them. And we will have a future still. Tell them everything can always change. So it depends on their attitude, depends on everybody else’s attitude and contribution. If they all go veg and encourage everyone else, then things will look bright.

프랑스 식물학자 장 마리 펠트는 기후변화의 해결책으로 영성 회복을 요청합니다. 

약사, 식물학자, 라디오 진행자와 작가 경력을 소유한  장마리 펠트는 아마 식물세계와 약학에 관한 각종 책을 통해서 가장 잘 알려졌을 것입니다. 그는 라디오와 TV를 통해 대중에게 과학을 전하는 것으로 인정받고 있습니다.  테랄리앙이 조직한 프랑스 파리에서 열린 국제박람회, 지속가능 소비를  장려하는 세계지구 축제에서 펠트 씨는 기후변화에 대해 말했습니다. 

 장마리 펠트, 저명한 식물학자이자 작가 : 이 세기 말에 바다는 최대 50cm까지 수면이 상승할 것입니다. 동일한 전문가들은 50cm 보다는 1미터가 될 거라고 말하고 있습니다. 1미터가 되면, 모든 환초와 방글라데시 네덜란드의 일부 카마르그가 물밑에 가라앉아 사람들은 더 이상 집을 갖지 못할 것입니다.

리포터 : 펠트씨의 책들은 폭넓은 지식과 생활에 밀접한 것들을 열성적으로 전달하여 널리 읽혔습니다. 그가 저술한 책들은 『자연과 영성』 『식물의 사회생활』 『우주에서 생명까지』가  있습니다. 기후변화와 관련해 그는 3가지 견해와 현재 인류의 중요 목표를 약술했습니다. 

장마리 펠트: 우리가 기후를  혼란 시키면 분명히 그 결과는 우리가 감내해야 합니다. 두 번째 생각은 자연의 재산을 분별 있게 사용해야 한다는 것입니다. 낭비해서는 안 된다는 뜻이지요. 세 번째는 우리는 프로메테우스가 아닌 신처럼 행동해야 한다는 것입니다. 위대한 종교의 전통은 이런 생각을 전혀 지지하지 않고 있습니다. 그들이 원하는 것과 반대로 우리는 사랑으로 돌봐야 할 자연과 형제애의 우호적인 관계와 온화함 속에 살아야 합니다. 그러면 우리는 자신의 영성을 고양하게 됩니다. 그것이 인류의 목표입니다. 끝으로 다음 질문을 하며 마치겠습니다. 경제，소비，성장， 기술이 인류의 미래일까요？ 아니면 방금 말한 그 모든 것을 염두에 두고 영성이 행동을 이끌는  사랑이 충만하고 타인과 동물，식물에까지  애정이 깊은 사람， 우리가 바라듯이 그렇게 달라진 사람이 인류의 미래일까요？

French botanist Jean-Marie Pelt calls for return to spirituality to solve climate change.

A pharmacist, botanist, radio host and author, throughout his career Jean-Marie Pelt is perhaps best known through his various books on the vegetable world and pharmacology. He is recognized for his work to communicate science to the public through radio and television. Mr. Pelt spoke out on climate change, at the Global Earth Festival, an international fair in Paris, France promoting sustainable consumption organized by Terralliance.

Jean-Marie Pelt, Famous French botanist and author: The sea was supposed to rise by a maximum of 50 cm by the end of the century. Now, the same experts are saying that it would be rather 1 meter than 50 cm. With 1 meter, that is all the atolls under water, that is Bangladesh under water, that is a part of Holland under water, that is Camargue under water, it is people that do not have homes anymore.

VOICE: Mr. Pelt’s books are widely read for their broad span of knowledge and keen way of bringing things close to home. They include “Nature and Spirituality,” “The Social Life of Plants,” and “From the Universe to Being.” On climate change, he outlines three ideas and a main goal for humanity at this time.

Jean-Marie Pelt: If we mess up the climate, obviously we’ll have to bear completely the consequences. The second idea is that we must make a sober use of the property of the nature, which means that we should not waste. The third idea, is that we should try not to be Promethean and acting as if we were God. The great religious traditions are not supporting this idea at all.

And to conclude, the question is as follows: Is the future of humanity economy, consumption, growth, technology? Or is it rather a different man that we would like to see emerged which would take into account everything that has been said now and which would be carried by a spirituality in action, and full of love and affection for the other people as well as animals and plants.

터키에 빙하가 사라지고 있습니다.

터키 유준쿠 일 대학 알리 후앗 도구 지리학과 학과장은 터키 동부 밴 호수로 흘러 드는 빙하가 해빙으로 위기에 처해 있다고경고합니다. 그는 말합니다. 『저희 관찰 결과는 30 -40년 전부터  이 지역을 관찰한 보고와 다릅니다. 이 빙하들은 3년을 버티지 못할 겁니다. 이 빙하들이 곧 사라질 것임이 명확합니다.』 빙하가 없다면 오직 계절 강수량이 밴 호수의 수원이 될 거라고 교수는 덧붙여 말했습니다. 따라서 호수의 수위가 감소하여 생물 다양성이 물 부족으로 심각하게 영향을 받을 것입니다. 터키 동부의  빙하 상태를 경고해주신 알리 후앗 도구 교수에게 감사드립니다. 천국의 은총으로 우리 모두 빙하 해빙과 같이 세계적으로 발생하는 기후변화 관련  사건에 책임을 가지고 대처하길 기원합니다.   

Expert finds disappearing glaciers in Turkey.
 
Professor Ali Fuat Doğu, the head of Turkey’s Yüzüncü Yıl University's department of geography warns that the glaciers feeding water to Lake Van in Eastern Turkey are in jeopardy due to melting.  He stated, "Our observations differ from previous reports on these areas from 30-40 years ago. These glaciers cannot survive another three years. We can clearly say that these glaciers are disappearing quickly." The professor added that without the glaciers, Lake Van would only have seasonal precipitation as a water source. Water levels in the lake thus would likely drop and its biodiversity would be significantly affected by the water shortage.

We appreciate your cautionary words, Professor Ali Fuat Doğu, on the state of the glaciers in Eastern Turkey. With Heaven’s grace, may we all take responsibility in addressing climate change-related events such as this and other glacier melts occurring worldwide.

노르웨이 북부 섬 대부분에서 지구 온난화의 영향을 나타납니다.

노르웨이와 북극 사이에 위치한 스발바드 섬의  천５백 명 인구도시 롱이어비엔 주변의 피오르드와 빙하가 기후변화로 인해 커다란 변화를 보이고 있습니다. 롱이어비엔에 12년 거주한 크리스틴 그로팅은 피오르드 빙하가 한 겨울에도 얼지 않으며 주변의 빙하는 점점 더 줄어들고 있다고 말했습니다. 지구 온난화가 삶에 끼치는 영향에 대한 롱이어비엔 주민들의 염려에 동감합니다. 소중한 환경 보존을 위해 필요한 조치를 취할 수 있기를 기도합니다.   

Norway’s most northern islands reflect a warming globe.

Longyearbyen, a town of 1,500 people in the Svalbard Islands, located between Norway and the North Pole, is experiencing great changes in the surrounding fjords and glaciers due to the climate change. Resident Kristin Grotting, who has been living in Longyearbyen for 12 years, said that the Icefjord is not freezing now even in the middle of the winter and the glaciers surrounding it  keep receding more and more.

We share your concerns, residents of Longyearbyen, about the effects of global warming on our lives. We pray that we will be able to take the necessary steps to preserve our precious environment.

러시아 과학자들이 지구 온난화로 인해 북극 기지를  떠나야 합니다.

일요일 러시아의  북극연구원 21명과 개 2마리가 급속히 녹는 유빙 위의 캠프로부터  구출되어야 했습니다. 북극 캠프 35는  2007년 9월에 설립되어 올해 8월말까지 머물 계획이었으나. 올해 해빙 시기가 빨라져 캠프의 유빙이 따뜻한 물을 향해 떠내려가는 바람에 과학자들이 생명의 위험에 빠졌습니다. 

러시아 과학자들과 동물들의 안전을 지켜주신 신께 감사드립니다. 우리 모두가 이런 사건들을 통해 자연의 경고를 새기고 소중한 지구를 지키기 위해 신속히 행동하길 기원합니다. 

Russian scientists forced to evacuate polar station due to global warming.

On Sunday, 21 Russian polar researchers and their two dogs had to be rescued from their camp on a rapidly melting ice floe. Camp North Pole 35 was set up in September 2007 with the original intention of staying until late August 2008. However, the early arrival of the 2008 melting season along with the camp’s ice floe currently drifting toward a warmer water current had placed the scientist’s lives in danger.

We thank God for the safety of the Russian researchers and their animal companions. May we all heed the warnings of Nature through events such as these and act quickly to preserve our cherished planetary home.
