북미의 소나무가 사라지고 있습니다.

북미 전역의 정부 공무원들과 전문가들은 멕시코 북부에서 알래스카, 캐나다에 이르기까지 매년 수백만 에이커에 달하는 오래된 소나무들이 사라지고 있다는 놀라운 사실을 발견했습니다. 기후변화로 인한 지난 십 년 간의 가뭄으로 나무들의 자연내성이 나무들의 질병에 취약해졌습니다. 이런 손실은 말라 죽은 나무들로 생긴 건조한 목재가 산불위험을 가중시키며 심화됩니다. 생명을 주는 수많은 나무들이 기후변화로 입는 손실을 조명해준 사려깊은 공무원들과 과학자들께 감사드립니다. 우리의 의지가 강해져 생태계의 균형을 회복할 수 있는 지속가능하고 사려깊은 삶의 방식을 속히 취하길 바랍니다.

캐나다의 브리티시 컬럼비아 협회원들과의 화상회의에서 칭하이 무상사는 삼림보존과 식목이 왜 지구의 생존에 충분한 해결책이 아닌지 다음처럼 설명하셨습니다.

칭하이 무상사: 나무 심기만으론 해결책이 될 수 없어요. 왜냐면 여러분이 보듯이 자연은 우리가 야기한 나쁜 업보의 균형을 잡는 방법이 있으니까요. 우리가 더 많은 나무를 심는다 해도 뭔가가 발생할 겁니다. 아마 산불이나 딱정벌레가 더 많아져 모든 삼림을 먹어 없앨 겁니다. 그래서 이건 정말 심각한 상황이죠. 우린 도덕적으로 온전해야 합니다. 도덕적이어야 합니다. 아니면 나쁜 업장, 우리가 한 것에 대한 응보를 피할 수 없습니다. 차량의 이산화탄소 배출을 줄이려고 노력해도 자연은 뭔가를 하고 있습니다. 우리가 우리의 도덕 기준을 신경 쓰지 않기에 도덕적 생활양식에서 뭔가가 어떤 정도 결여돼 왔습니다. 그래서 내가 우리의 유일한 피난처는 우리 자신의 도덕에 있다고 하는 겁니다. 우린 다시 자비로워져야 합니다. 천상이 의도한 고귀한 삶을 살기 위해 우린 자신의 마음을 주의 깊게 살펴야 합니다. 그래서 식목만으론 완전한 해결책이 될 수 없습니다. 우린 채식을 해야 합니다.

기후변화가 급속도로 진행됩니다.

독일의 포츠담 지구온난화 영향 연구소 소장이자 앙겔라 메르켈 독일 수상의 고문인 한스 쉘른허버 교수는 지구온난화는 사실 많은 사람들과 정부가 여기는 것보다 빠른 속도로 진행되고 있다고 지적했습니다. 쉘른허버 교수에 따르면 북극 지역은 이미 기온상승 면에서 티핑 포인트를 넘었습니다. 그는 지구를 구하기 위해선 선진국과 개도국 모두의 통합되고 즉각적인 전세계적 노력이 필요하다고 말합니다. 전문지식을 나눠준 쉘른허버 교수께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 인류가 속히 지구의 조화로운 균형을 위해 노력하길 바랍니다.

아부다비가 지속 가능성을 추구합니다.

아랍에미리트연방 ７개국 중 가장 큰 곳인 아부다비가 기후변화에 대처할 지속가능 에너지 기술 발전에 미화 백억 불의 기금을 조성합니다. 특히 태양에너지에서 세계 선두가 되고자 아랍에미리트연방은 ２０１５년까지 마스다르 시티를 완공할 예정입니다. 이 사업은 세계 최초 차 없는 도시, 방출물 없는 도시로 설계되며 인구 ５만과 １천 ５백 개 회사들을 수용하게 됩니다. 또 다른 사업으로 마스다르 ＰＶ는 독일 기업과 협력해 매년 대형 박막 태양패널로 ２８０메가와트를 생산할 거라고 합니다. 이들 친환경 사업은 경제를 부양시킬 많은 일자리 창출에도 도움이 될 것입니다. 환경을 고려하여 고귀한 사업을 시작한 아랍에미리트연방, 아부 다비와 독일에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 여러분의 친환경 노력에 알라의 축복이 함께하여 우리 행성이 균형과 아름다움 속에 새롭게 태어나길 바랍니다.

미국이 ２００９년을 녹색정책으로 맞습니다.

１월 １일부로 캘리포니아에서 판매되는 새 차량엔 모두 스모그와 지구온난화 관련 환경 등급 라벨이 붙습니다. 북동부의 오리건 주 주지사인 테드 쿨롱고스키는 에너지 효율에 따라 주택과 상업건물을 평가하자고 제안하고 있습니다. 새 친환경 계획 하에 플로리다의 게인즈빌 전기업체인 ＧＲＵ는 태양열로 생산되는 전기를 구입한다고 약속했습니다. 한편 미시간 주의 제니퍼 그랜홈 주지사는 직업훈련 등 여러 프로그램을 위한 일련의 지속가능 에너지 법률을 통과시켰습니다. 전도 유망한 친환경 정책을 알게 돼 기쁩니다. 지구에 영향을 덜 주는 이런 노력들로 우리 세상의 독특하고 유일한 생태계가 보존되길 바랍니다. 

Pine trees perishing in North America.

Government officials and experts across the continent find that an alarming trend is extending from Mexico northward to Alaska and Canada, as millions of acres of age-old pine forests are being lost each year. Climate change-related drought conditions for the past ten years have weakened the trees’ natural resistance, making them susceptible to disease. This loss is compounded as the dry wood left by the trees that have perished then poses further hazard for increased forest fires. Our thanks to all concerned officials and scientists for highlighting this climate-based loss of so many life-sustaining trees. May our motivation be strengthened to quickly adopt sustainable and considerate living practices that can restore the equilibrium of our ecosphere.

German scientist warns climate change accelerating.

Climate change advancing all too quickly. Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, head of the renowned Potsdam Institute for Research on Global Warming Effects in Germany, and adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, says that global warming is actually happening faster than many people or governments believe. According to Professor Schellnhuber, the Arctic region has already crossed the tipping point in terms of rising temperatures. He stated that a unified and immediate global effort is needed both from developed and developing nations if the planet is to be saved. Professor Schellnhuber, we express our heartfelt appreciation, for your expertise and concern. We pray that humanity quickly works to ensure the harmonious balance of our Earth.

Abu Dhabi: The New Prince of Solar Technology

Abu Dhabi sets sights on sustainability. As the largest of the United Arab Emirates seven states, Abu Dhabi has initiated a US$10 billion fund for advancing sustainable energy technology to address climate change. With plans to be a world leader especially in solar power, the emirate is set to complete the entire municipality of Masdar City by 2015. This project is designed to be the world’s first car-free, zero-emission city, housing 50,000 people and 1,500 companies. Another venture, Masdar PV, represents a partnering with German companies to produce up to 280 Megawatts of large thin-film solar panels per year. These green initiatives will also help generate an abundance of jobs to sustain the economy. A big round of applause, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and Germany, for your noble initiatives in consideration of our environment. May Allah bless such eco-endeavors as yours in helping our planet be renewed in balance and beauty.

2009 welcomes green initiatives in the US.

Effective January 1 in California, every new car sold is labeled with environmental ratings for both smog and global warming. In the northwestern state of Oregon, Governor Ted Kulongoski is proposing to rank both homes and commercial buildings sold in the state for their energy efficiency. And in a new eco-program, Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) in Florida has pledged to buy the electricity generated by participants’ solar systems. Meanwhile, in the state of Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm has passed a set of sustainable energy laws for programs that include provisions for job training. We are heartened, state leaders, to know of these promising green measures. Blessed be all such endeavors to tread more lightly on the planet, thus preserving our world’s unique and irreplaceable biodiversity.
