Open endorsement of a vegetarian diet could go far to protect the Earth.

Regarding the way to stop and even reverse global warming, Supreme Master Ching Hai has emphasized the effective role of the media and the government in initiating change for larger populations. Ireland’s East Coast FM Radio co-host and newly vegetarian Louise Kings asked Supreme Master Ching Hai for her advice on how to spread awareness of this urgent issue.

Interview with Supreme Master Ching Hai by East Coast FM Radio, Ireland
Sunday, August 31, 2008

LK(f): Policy makers and leading environmental organizations as well as the transportation industry are doing a good job of  informing the public about greener transportation options and greener energy, and are working toward solutions with wind, wave and solar power, etc.

But up to now they have been slow when it comes to the livestock issue, which means that also the public isn’t being informed and that the urgent changes we need to make are not being made quickly enough. What can we do to raise public awareness, so that it’s not just the research scientists that know about it, but every man, woman and child know about it?

Supreme Master Ching Hai : That’s a very good, good question, Madam. I think the media like yours play an important role in raising public awareness about this urgent planetary situation. And some other media agencies have also begun to make related info available to the public at large. I just hope that there are more announcements concerning climate changes and the solution made to the whole public.

The best solution for our urgent situation right now is a vegetarian diet and it should be openly endorsed and even made into law if possible to protect people, animals and our planet, the only one that we have.

If everyone who knows the planet urgency and the miracle benefit of a vegetarian solution to save the Earth, if all of them would extend their help by being an example and spread out the news, then it would be quicker and more hopeful. And above all, if the government makes it a policy to inform the public and to endorse the vegetarian diet openly, it becomes like a trend to change the bad habit of meat eating and encourage the new good tradition of vegetarian diet.

Scientists confirm warming temperatures.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Michael Mann of Pennsylvania State University in the United States have released a report confirming their original 1998 findings about rising temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. As the original conclusions were questioned by some, the scientists set out to analyze additional data going back as far as 2,000 years. By employing a number of different analytical methods, they were able to verify that the original findings were correct, which is that Northern Hemisphere temperatures now are much higher than before the start of the Industrial Age. Additional data analyzed in the more recent study further allowed the scientists to conclude that temperatures now are in fact higher than anytime since 700AD.

We express our thankfulness, Dr. Michael Mann and colleagues, for confirming the reality of our quickly warming planet. We pray these facts will help the world’s citizens awaken to our need to act quickly in preserving our Earthly abode.

Climate change endangers Japanese Zen gardens.

Studies by Kyoto University revealed that rising temperatures and changing rain patterns caused by global warming effects are destroying the gardens’ vital moss. This moss is essential to the ancient Japanese heritage and gardens of famous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Josho Toga, head priest of Tenryu-ji temple, said: “For moss to survive, it needs soft rain, morning dew and sun. But the weather these days is like that of a subtropical region.”

Kyoto University scientists, many thanks for these revealing results. May the Divine bestow blessings for humans to adopt more eco-friendly lifestyles to protect the balance and beauty of our precious Earth.

Over-exploitation of underground water is harming the environment.

During a two-day seminar in Bali, Indonesia, environmental experts spoke about the current water shortage in Asia, and its future impacts. Dr. Brahma Chellaney from the Strategic Studies Centre for Policy Research in India stated that ground water is being used at a much higher rate than can be replenished by nature. He said, “Over-exploitation of aquifers will affect ecosystems, and in turn accelerate global warming.” The overuse of underground water is evidenced through such phenomena as sinking pavements and sidewalks in Thailand and Âu Lạc (Vietnam), as well as a shrinking water supply in China. Seminar participants encouraged Asian governments to better protect and manage groundwater reserves.

Thank you, Dr. Chellaney and all participants for this timely information. May the people of Asia and all countries adopt a plant-based diet for its proven water-efficiency and planet-cooling benefits.
