Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Japan.
Recent data has revealed that Japan’s economy declined even more than expected following the deadly March 11 disaster with a recession that has emerged, disrupting production and prompting decreases in spending.

Although cost has not been specifically identified as a factor in caring for animals, their situation has also become increasingly dire, especially within the 20-kilometer mandatory evacuation zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

As no one can regularly enter to feed them due to radiation concerns, the Japanese government announced plans to slaughter some 675,000 chickens and other domesticated farm animals in the region.

In addition to the sad losses resulting from such actions, there are still thousands more animal companions such as dogs that are unaccounted for, many who have already died of starvation.

Some groups such as the US-based Hachiko Coalition have called for Prime Minister Kan's office to conduct an organized evacuation of both companion and farm animals.

Apart from the initial donation of US$ 80,000, which, combined with contributions from our Association members, totals over US$172,000 for the Japan quake and tsunami victims,in response to the pressing need to save these innocent beings, Supreme Master Ching Hai additionally donated US$10,000 to the Coalition Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies (HRAE), comprising four organizations: Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA), Japan Animal Welfare Society, Japan Pet Care Association, and Japan Veterinary Medical Association.

Our Association members went to speak with the chief of HRAE and chairman of JSPCA, Mr. Shiro Nakagawa, who spoke of their efforts.

Shiro Nakagawa, Chief of the Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies, Chairman of Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (M): I think that perhaps there are over 100 animals in a shelter now. I do not know the exact number, but I am sure that a considerable number of
animals are from the stricken areas of Fukushima prefecture.

Because such psychological care is so important, our organization equips professionals of this field including veterinarians, animal care specialists, and trimmers. And they are teaming up now to establish a system for animal care.

VOICE: Along with Supreme Master Ching Hai’s donation, the Association members presented the coalition with the Japanese edition of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s #1 international bestselling books “The Dogs in My Life,” "The Birds in My Life" and “The Noble Wilds," as well as her DVDs.
