Progress noted in banning cluster munitions worldwide. According to a report released on Monday, November 1 by the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor the recently enacted Convention on Cluster Munitions has already been fulfilled by seven of its 108 signatory countries. The nations of Norway, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Moldova and Montenegro have disposed of a combined total of 13.8 million devices. The report, which is co-authored by a network of researchers organized through the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, went on to say that 11 more nations are also on their way to fulfilling the pledge of the treaty to do away with cluster munitions stockpiles. Remarking on these swift actions, Cluster Munition Monitor editor Stephen Goose stated, “The progress that has been made in eliminating these weapons from the face of the earth has been nothing short of remarkable.”
