こんにちは 尊敬すべき治安判事 裁判官の皆さま アシスタントの皆さま 高潔な皆様 この新しい計画の 始まりという 特別な機会への 参加にご招待頂き 大変光栄に思います 「環境権への 参加証書」という この世界の懸念する 一住人として 私は皆さまの 環境と 私たちの世界に対する 真摯な努力と 高いレベルの配慮と 献身に 感謝と祝辞を 述べたいと思います この星の全ての生物に 最もためになることを 実行する能力が 強まりますように 本日　気候変動と 最も切迫した 要因についての 最新の科学的根拠を 共有しながら賢明な 統治へ向け　僅かにも 貢献することができ とても光栄に思います

Ａ　気候への影響と 脅威 世界中の至る所で 切迫する 危機の兆候が 見受けられます まず暴風雨の激しさは　 ５年前の約 ２倍になっています 損害やトラウマ 悲しみに暮れる家族を 残した　 メキシコのここ最近の ハリケーン洪水からもお分りのようにです それと同時に より速いペースで 海水面は上昇し 少なくとも １８の島国が 完全に消滅し 多くの 沿岸地域が絶えず 脅かされています かつては そびえ立っていた 氷河も減少しそのため ２０億人分の　水と 食料が不足しています

何千という河川と 水源が 枯渇しつつあるか 干上がっています メキシコ自身 ここ７０年間で 最悪の干ばつを 経験しています 今　気候変動のために ３０万の 人類の仲間が 毎年犠牲となり ２０００万人以上が 気候難民として移住を 余儀なくされています また科学者は 今まさに解けている 北極の永久凍土層や かつてなく暖められた 海の下の何十億トンの メタンを心配してます どちらかの一部でも 放出されれば集団絶滅 誘引となりかねません Ｂ　原因 これら破壊的被害の 原因は何でしょうか 車でもなく　船でも 飛行機でもありません

火力発電所や もくもくと煙を 吐き続ける石炭工場 でもありません 地球温暖化の 一番の原因は 家畜です 最近の研究によると 世界で排出される 温室効果ガスの ５０％以上の原因は 家畜の飼育とされます 家畜は人間の活動で 排出されるメタンの 唯一最大の原因で 二十年以上に渡り 測定されてきたように ＣＯ２の７２倍以上 熱を封じ込める 温室効果ガスです この熱を封じ込める メタンの良いところは ＣＯ２に比べ とても短命で すぐに消滅して しまうことです ＣＯ２(二酸化炭素)は 大気中に何千年も 残りますが 一方のメタンは　 たった十二年しか 大気中に留まれません

言い換えると メタンは短期間に 大きな被害を 引き起こしますが 放出するのを止めれば 急速な温暖化の流れを 逆向きにできるのです 従って地球温暖化を すぐに止めるには メタン放出を止める そのためには最大の 排出源　家畜の飼育を 止めねばなりません Ｃ　家畜 では家畜について 話しましょう 家畜の飼育は 計り知れないほどの 環境への有害な影響と 地球温暖化を　 ひどく悪化させるもの 全ての原因であります 国連などの 研究によると 家畜の飼育は 圧倒的かつ破壊的な 影響を引き起こすと 分かっています

１　森林破壊 家畜の飼育は 唯一最大の人間の 土地利用であり 森林破壊の 主な原因となります 一九七〇年より 家畜の生産は アマゾンの森林破壊の ９０％の原因と なってきています 土地をならし飼料用の 牧草を育てるためです サッカー場の広さの 熱帯雨林が毎秒 ただ２５０個の ハンバーガーのために 破壊されています 科学者らは 私たちがこの破壊への 活動を続ければ 地球の森林はすぐに 温室効果ガスの 吸収をやめ　代わりに 大量のＣＯ２ （二酸化炭素）を 放出すると危惧します さらに畜産にかかわる 活動による森林破壊は　 黒色炭素をも生みます 黒色炭素とは 温室効果ガスの一つで ＣＯ２の６８０倍も 熱を封じ込め 世界中の氷河を さらに速く 溶かしてしまいます 黒色炭素放出の ４０％以上の原因は 家畜のために森林の 焼き払う行為です

２　土壌の浸食と 砂漠化 世界の土壌浸食の ５０％の以上原因は 家畜であり 森林破壊と共に 砂漠化を引き起します

３　生物多様性の損失 家畜は土地の劣化や 他の生物の生息地を 破壊するため 動物や植物の 絶滅を 引き起こします 畜産業は 美しい野生生物を 絶滅させます メキシコ自身も含めて

４　壊滅的な汚染 全部門の中で 食肉産業は 水質の 最大の汚染源です 過度で　しかも 規制もない動物のし尿 科学肥料 殺虫剤　抗生物質 そして家畜に関連した 汚染物質は 私たちの水路を詰らせ 海中に死の海域を 作ります　例えば メキシコ湾は大規模な その一例といえます

５　疾病 人間の感染症の ６・５％以上が 動物によりうつると 分かっています 不潔で無慈悲な 工場式畜産場は 鳥インフルエンザや 豚インフルエンザなど 世界的流行病の 被害をもたらす 到死力のある　細菌 ウィルスの 温床となっています

６　食料の浪費 家畜には 植物性たんぱく質の １２倍の量に匹敵する 穀物を使います 約７・３億トンもの 世界の穀物が 動物性たんぱく質の 生産に使われます これは、 世界中の飢餓に苦しむ １０億人の人々に 供給するより 何倍も多い量です

７　水の浪費 一食分の牛肉は ４５４３リットル以上 水を必要としますが 完璧な栄養バランスの ビーガンの食事は たった３７０リットル ほどの水で良いのです １１億人が 安全な飲み水を 得られない一方で 私達は３・８兆トンの 貴重な清浄水を 毎年家畜生産のために 無駄にしているのです

８　エネルギーと 資源の浪費 動物製品の生産には 植物性のものに比べ ８倍もの 化石燃料エネルギーを 必要とします ある研究によると 食肉　乳製品の生産は メキシコでは 国の農業生産資源の 最大の使用用途であり またそれは　世界中 同じような状況という ことを反映しています 全ての証拠が　明確に 声高に証明します これらの資源 土地　水　穀物が 家畜ではなく 人間の生活そのものを 直接支えてさえいれば なんと 違った世界と なることでしょう

尊敬する気候科学者の ＮＡＳＡのジェームス ハンセン博士や ブラジル国立 宇宙研究所のカルロス ノーブレ博士そして 国連気候変動に関する 政府間パネルの議長 ラジェンドラ パチャウリ氏など こういった方々は 皆肉の消費を減らすか ベジタリアンになる事 それが一番効果的な 地球温暖化の 解決策となると 言明しています つまり動物に優しい 思いやりのある生活を せねばならないのです

さてここで ビーガン有機食生活の 多くの利点の中から 一例だけを紹介します Ｄ　ベジには 利点がある 第一に　牧草のための 土地や飼育用の餌は 温暖化を軽減できる 森になり得ます 加えて　すべての 耕作に適した土地が 有機栽培の 菜園となったなら 人間にとっての 食料不足が改善される だけでなく 大気中の 温室効果ガスを 吸収できます これに加え　家畜を 飼育する際放出する 温室効果ガスも５０％ 以上除去できます ですからまとめると　 私達は動物性分なしの ビーガンの食生活を 採用するだけで 人間の活動による 温室効果ガスを ほとんど除去できます

そしてこれは 世界中の政府の 財政の相当な節約へと つながります ビーガン食への移行で 世界中の政府は 二〇五〇年までに ３２兆米ドル 節約できるか　気候緩和のための 資金総額の８０％の 節約になります 最後に　当然ですが ガンを防ぐ等 ビーガンの食事の 健康面での 利点も 絶大です 心臓病や糖尿病を 予防します 免疫システムを 活性化し 寿命を延ばしたり 健康状態や知性 大人も子供も同様に 穏やかさを 保つことができます 最後に 尊敬すべき皆様 偉大な国家 メキシコはいつも 自身の環境活動や 気候変動に立ち向かい 世界を守る 最前線に立とうと 前へ進もうと しています

メキシコ憲法にも そう記されています 全ての人は 彼らの発展と 幸福のために 環境を 適切にする権利がある 素晴らしいです この星にとって 地球規模の大災害が 今にも起こりそうな 最も切迫したこの時に 国や生き物を救う 貴国の尊大な慈悲を 私は嘆願します そうでないと とてつもなく巨大な 大災害が起るでしょう 国民　家族 そして子供たちに 想像もつかないくらい 大きく耐え難い苦悩が 襲い掛かるでしょう 私達の星を救うために ビーガンになるべきと 言う時の真実で貴国を 称えられるだけです

May 4, 2008 - Monaco The significance of a vegetarian diet, one that is animal free, is further supported by the 2006 UN report, “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” which states that raising animals for livestock generates more carbon emissions than all of the world’s transport combined.

Furthermore, in late 2009 the Worldwatch Institute published a new study called “Livestock and Climate Change” which revealed that “livestock and their byproducts account for at least 51% of the annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.”

In fact, farm animals also release other noxious gases including methane, a gas that is 72 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.

After over 20  years of sharing her knowledge on how to live a balanced life while pursuing a spiritual path, Supreme Master Ching Hai continues to dedicate her time and effort to uplift and enhance the life of all beings.

Today we present to you Supreme Master Ching Hai’s video message to the Association of Mexican Magistrates Pro Environment Justice on October 29, 2009 in Mexico City, Mexico, and her interview by Country Focus on BBC Radio Wales on November 12, 2009.

Greetings，honorable magistrates，esteemed judges，respected assistants，noble ladies and gentlemen.
I am deeply honored and humbled by the invitation to participate in this special occasion，inaugurating your new program，the 『Diploma Participation in Environmental Rights.』 As a fellow concerned citizen of this world，I offer my congratulations and gratitude for this sincere endeavor that demonstrates your high degree of care and dedication to the environment and our world.

May it strengthen your ability to carry out what is most just for all beings on this planet. Today，I am very honored to offer my humble contribution toward your wise rulings by sharing some of the newest scientific evidence about climate change and its most urgent cause.

A. CLIMATE EFFECTS & THREATS

We have signs of imminent crisis that are evident in all corners of the world. First，storms have nearly doubled in intensity over the past ５ years，as we can see in Mexico’s own recent hurricanes and floods，which left damage，trauma and grieving families.

Meanwhile，sea levels are rising and at a faster pace，with at least １８ island nations that have completely disappeared and many more coastal areas continually threatened.

Once towering glaciers are receding so fast that over ２ billion people are already short of water and food.
Many more suffer shortage as tens of thousands of rivers and waters are gone or drying. Mexico herself is currently undergoing the worst drought in nearly ７０ years.

With ３００，０００ fellow human beings now dying each year due to climate change，more than ２０ million have been displaced as 『climate refugees.』 Scientists also worry about the billions of tons of methane sitting beneath the now-melting Arctic permafrost and the ever-warming oceans. Just a fraction released from either one could trigger mass extinctions.

B. THE CAUSE
What causes these damaging changes？
It’s not cars，ships or planes. It is not coal plants，and it’s not even all the smoke-spewing industries in our world. The number one cause of global warming is: livestock.

Recent research tells us that livestock raising is responsible for more than ５０％ of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock is the single largest source of human-generated methane，a greenhouse gas that traps at least ７２ times more heat than ＣＯ２，as measured over a ２０-year period.

The good news about this heat-trapping methane is that this gas is also more short-lived than ＣＯ２ and disappears very quickly by comparison. ＣＯ２，(carbon dioxide) stays in the atmosphere for thousands of years，while the lifetime of methane in the atmosphere is only about １２ years. In other words，methane does much more damage in the short run but if we stop it，we will be able to reverse the trend of global warming very fast.

Therefore，to rapidly halt global warming，to halt the emission of methane，we must stop its #１ source: that is，livestock breeding.

C. LIVESTOCK
Now，we talk about livestock. Livestock raising is responsible for countless adverse environmental effects，each of which further aggravates global warming. According to the United Nations and other studies，livestock raising is known to cause the following devastating effects:

１. Deforestation:
Livestock raising is the single largest human use of land，and the main reason for deforestation. Since １９７０，livestock production has been responsible for ９０％ of the Amazon deforestation，to clear land for pasture and grow animal feed crops.

A rainforest area the size of a football field is destroyed every second to produce just ２５０ hamburgers. Scientists warn that if we continue on this damaging path，the Earth’s forests will soon stop absorbing greenhouse gases，and instead will start to release huge quantities of carbon dioxide (ＣＯ２). Moreover，deforestation for livestock activities also produces black carbon.

Black carbon is a greenhouse particle that is ６８０ times as heat-trapping as ＣＯ２，and causes the ice sheets and glaciers around the world to melt even faster. Up to ４０％ of black carbon emissions come from burning forests for livestock.

２. Soil erosion and desertification:
Over ５０％ of the world’s oil erosion is caused by livestock，which along with deforestation leads to desertification.

３. Biodiversity loss:
Livestock is the leading cause of animal and plant extinction due to land degradation and other habitat-destroying effects. The livestock industry is killing off our beautiful wildlife，including Mexico's own.

４. Deadly pollution:
Of all sectors，the meat industry is the biggest source of water pollution. Excessive and unregulated animal waste，chemical fertilizers，pesticides，antibiotics，and other livestock-related contaminants choke our waterways and create oceanic dead zones，such as the massive one in the Gulf of Mexico.

５. Disease:
Over ６５％ of human infectious diseases are known to be transmitted by animals.  The filthy and inhumane conditions of factory farming harbor lethal bacteria and viruses such as avian and swine flu，
which we all know is a pandemic continuing its global deadly toll.

６. Food waste:
Livestock uses up to １２ times the amount of grain as the same amount of vegetable protein. About ７３０ million tons of the world’s grain harvests are used to produce animal protein.
This could feed all the hungry people，numbering １ billion in the world，and many times over.

７. Water waste:
It takes over １，２００ gallons of water to grow １ serving of beef，but only ９８ gallons of water for one complete，nutritionally balanced vegan meal. While １.１ billion people lack access to safe drinking water，we waste ３.８ trillion tons of precious clean water each year for livestock production.

８. Energy and Resource waste:  
Animal products require ８ times as much fossil fuel energy to be produced，compared to vegetable products. A study found that meat and dairy production in Mexico use the most agricultural supplies and resources in the country，and this is reflected elsewhere around the world as well. All the evidence speaks so loud and clear. If these resources – land，water，and grain – were turned instead towards the direct support of human life instead of livestock，what a different world we would have.

Respected climate scientists including Dr. James Hansen of NASA，Dr. Carlos Nobre of Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research，and Dr. Rajendra Pachauri，head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – all have stated that reducing meat consumption or becoming vegetarian would be an effective solution to global warming.

That is，we have to live an animal-free lifestyle，a compassionate lifestyle. Now，I will present just some of the many benefits of a vegan organic diet.

D. We have VEG BENEFITS.  

First，the land for grazing and feed-growing could become forests that help reduce global warming. In addition，if all tillable land were turned into organic vegetable farmland，not only would people be fully fed，
but up to ４０％ of all the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere could be absorbed. This is in addition to the elimination of over ５０％ of emissions caused by livestock raising.

 Therefore，in sum，we eliminate most of the human-made greenhouse gases by simply adopting the animal-free vegan organic lifestyle. This also leads to considerable financial savings for world governments.
It has been calculated that by shifting to a vegan diet，the world’s governments would save US$３２ trillion by ２０５０，or a full ８０％ of total climate mitigation costs.

Finally，of course，there are the excellent health benefits of the vegan diet，which has been shown to prevent cancer significantly. It prevents and reverses heart disease and diabetes.

It boosts the immune system，extends longevity，and preserves the health，intelligence，and calmness of the adults and children alike.

In closing，honorable sirs and madams，the great country of Mexico has always looked toward advancement in her environmental actions，and are planning to be at the forefront to combat climate change and protect the world.

The Mexican Constitution even states that 『all persons have the right to an environment appropriate for their development and well-being.』 Bravo. At this most urgent time for the planet，I beseech your honorable graces to please help your country and our world spare lives from the impending global warming calamity.

If you don’t，there will be too massive a catastrophe，too immense a suffering upon people，families，the children，that our conscience might never be able to bear it.

I can only honor you with the truth when I say that we must become vegan to save our planet.
We cannot wait for the sustainable energy and green technology to be available and used by everyone. It would be too late.

I call upon the courage of all counsel present，with the authority and power vested in you， may you lead your co-citizens toward the noble，virtuous，life-saving，and planet-sustaining path. Thank you

After a memorable visit to the beautiful woodland in Cwn Mynach，Wales，which is protected by the Woodland Trust，UK’s leading woodland conservation charity，Huw Jenkins was impressed and wanted to know more about Supreme Master Ching Hai’s £１００，０００ contribution to the preservation of one of Wales’ natural wonderlands.

Mr. Jenkins asked，『Of all the places in the world，why did you choose to help this remote woodland
in a valley in Wales？』

Why Katrina (Hurricane Katrina)？
Why do we plant trees in Âu Lạc (Vietnam)？

Supreme Master Ching Hai : Oh，many. We have many. It’s just that we do what we can because our planet is in trouble everywhere. I wish I could do more than that. It’s just I’m an individual person，and I earn whatever I can earn – my honest money and labor – and whatever I know I can help，I help. There’s no particular this or that. When we donate，or we help somebody，we don’t really want to have our names or to be broadcast on the air; it is an embarrassing thing.
