According to a study published in the November 2011 Journal of the American Medical Association, the intake of plant-based foods can reverse the problem of high cholesterol as effectively or even more so than the popular medication type known as statins.

This medication, despite its known side effects such as sapping energy levels, is currently prescribed to reduce cholesterol in 25% of all adults over the age of 45 in the US.

Scientists in this study thus evaluated the effect of diet alone, and found that vegetarian fare consumed by two different groups of people reduced cholesterol at least as much as the statin medications.

Moreover, the researchers discovered that the group consuming even higher amounts of certain plant-based foods such as soy proteins, nuts, oats, peas and beans saw three times greater improvement.

Scientists, many thanks for this encouraging study that demonstrates yet another benefit of plant-based fare. May vibrant health be enjoyed by people across the US and the world as more and more turn to the revitalizing vegan lifestyle.
