Scientists from the University of Valencia in Spain who analyzed the waters of L'Albufera Natural Park reported evidence of eight illegal drugs, including cocaine and various forms of amphetamines.

The study moreover found the highest drug concentration and frequency in the park's northern Poyo Ravine area, which has the highest population density as well as industry and nightclubs.

Yolanda Picó, lead author and a senior professor in the Department of Nutrition stated, “The results confirm the presence of drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, codeine, morphine and cannabis.”

With L’Albufera Natural Park being one of the most important wetlands on the continent due to its biodiversity and being a main destination area for migratory birds, the researchers warn that such contamination if continued could have very harmful effects on humans and wildlife alike.
