  • 根据联合国跨政府气候变迁小组的报告「牲畜的巨大阴影」指出，畜牧生产是导致全球暖化的最大因素。
  • 动物排泄物及畜牧饲料作物用地，对水源所造成的污染影响，比人们所有活动加总为大。
  • 供应肉食餐所需土地，是蔬食餐的10到20倍之多，全世界几乎有一半的谷物和大豆产量，都用于喂食牲畜。

畜牧生产占温室气体总排量的18%，包括：
二氧化碳：9%
甲烷：37%—其对全球暖化的威胁，以100年分摊，是二氧化碳的23倍、以20年分摊是62倍
氧化亚氮(N2O)：65%—其对全球暖化的威胁，以100年分摊，是二氧化碳的296倍、以20年分摊是275倍

生产1公斤牛肉：

  • 温室气体排量威胁，相当于36.4公斤的二氧化碳。
  • 使用化学肥料相当于释放340克的二氧化硫，和59克的磷酸盐，耗费1亿6千9百万焦耳的能量。
  • 生产1公斤牛肉的二氧化碳排量相当于欧系车每250公里的排量，足以点亮1个100瓦的灯泡20天。
  • 超过叁分之二的能源用于供应生产及运输牲畜饲料。
