On July 5, 2011, US President Barack Obama declared 12 counties in the state of Texas as disaster areas due to extensive wildfire damage, in addition to the entire state having been designated a natural disaster area due to the widespread impact of one of the worst droughts in more than 100 years.

In China's northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, severe drought as of July 2011 caused by lack of rain since the previous winter has dried up about 197 water reservoirs, creating a shortage of drinking water for 800,000 people and threatening more than four million acres of crops.
