Wild flower re-planting to boost bee numbers - 22 Apr 2011

In the UK, a £60,000 pilot project is being launched in Yorkshire to support farmers and other landowners in sowing wildflowers along roadsides, fields and houses to create a network of green, pollination-friendly corridors known as "bee roads."

As part of a 30-year study in the West Antarctic Peninsula, US scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) state that climate change is the most likely cause for the loss of more than 50% of both Adélie and chinstrap penguin populations.

The government of Ecuador declares a state of emergency across six provinces due to drought, which has adversely affected some 210,000 hectares of crops, causing the outright loss of about 180,000 hectares of maize and rice.
