Vedanthankal Lake Bird Sanctuary in India's Tamil Nadu state, home to over 40,000 birds as the oldest water bird sanctuary in the country, reports massive avian deaths in the season ending in June 2011 for reasons that appear to include excessive heat and pollution.

The city of Sydney, Australia registers shock at a first-ever occurrence of the deadly Hendra virus, a highly lethal disease that affects horses and humans with no medical cure, as 12 horses have now perished and eight people infected so far, with the disease thought to be spreading south in part due to the effects of climate change.
