New US report says there’s no safe level for tobacco. A newly released US Surgeon General’s report, the first on the subject in four years, has stated that even low-level exposure to tobacco aggravates health problems, with just one cigarette being enough to cause a heart attack in someone with existing heart disease. With health costs and lost productivity in the USA alone having reached US$193 billion a year, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin also noted that the design of cigarettes has been changed by the manufacturers, making them more attractive to youth while becoming more lethal than ever. She stated, “There is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke. The chemicals in tobacco smoke reach your lungs quickly every time you inhale, causing damage immediately. Inhaling even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke can also damage your DNA, which can lead to cancer.”
Surgeon General Benjamin, we appreciate this significant report showing the harms of all levels of tobacco exposure. May such information help more and more people choose the smoke-free lifestyle, bringing benefit to both themselves and precious loved ones.
