In animal welfare news, birds in a United Kingdom bay are safeguarded. Liverpool Bay off the west coast of England has been authorized as a Special Protection Area (SPA). An important feeding ground for the common scoter and red-throated diver, the region is one of 15 marine protected areas which have been identified around the nation. Its SPA status has been granted under a European directive on the conservation of wild birds. It will ensure the safety of wildlife for the benefit of present and future generations.
